Close Up – Don’t Just Sit There!

At the rate people are lounging around or hunching over their work desks, sitting is the new equivalent of smoking. Did you know that too much sitting can be hazardous for your health and decrease your life expectancy? Want some more depressing and upsetting news… even if you exercise for 30+ minutes each day, that does NOT counteract the negative effects of sitting. Studies have shown that the more you sit the more you run an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and various forms of cancer – Just TWO HOURS of sitting in front of the television can increase lung cancer by 6%, colon cancer by 8% and endometrial cancer by 10%

Here are some ways to keep sitting from killing you:

1) Stand up and walk around for 5 minutes every 30 minutes

3) Walk to the farthest bathroom in your home and/or workplace when going to the restroom – this is of course IF multiple bathrooms are an option

4) Stand and/or walk around room when talking on the telephone

5) Consider getting a standing workstation that you can use as an alternative to a typical desk

6) Stretch and take a 10 minute walk during every coffee break

7) If you work in an office and need to communicate with someone, don’t email! Get up and to communicate with them

8) If you HAVE to sit at your desk… Get a THIGH MASTER. Yes, a thigh master!! I have one, I use it every day and I absolutely swear by it! Purchase yours HERE

9) If a thigh master isn’t for you, try sitting on a stability ball – But, don’t wobble around! Sit upright and still, engaging and strengthening your core

I honestly believe in healthy living and exercise. There is ALWAYS time to get your butt up out of bed or off the sofa and do something. My exercise of choice is BUTI Yoga (not just because one of my oldest and closest friends, Bizzie Gold, is the founder, but because it REALLY works), a movement practice that infuses yoga, tribal dance and plyometrics into a high intensity workout that transforms your body from the inside out…

Here is a simple 25 minute workout video to get you started…
